Special Note About Honduras, Roatan, and Anthony’s Key

The Board of Directors of Diving for Life is cognizant of the political situation in Honduras in 2009.  There are varying opinions about the presidential election in November 2009, but the United States and the international community overall support the legitimacy of President Pepe Lobo.  In 2009, there was unrest and some persecution of the LGBT community on the mainland of Honduras; we are hopeful that the treatment of LGBT people in Honduras will continue to improve.  During the worst of the unrest on mainland Honduras in 2009, no flights were stopped into or out of Roatan.  Activities in Roatan continued unimpeded, with the exception of one night of curfew. 

The owners and management of Anthony’s Key Resort welcome Diving for Life and are aware that Diving for Life is an event for LGBT divers and their friends which raises money for LGBT health charities.  We are confident that Diving for Life’s presence in Roatan will help to educate Honduran citizens and help to improve conditions for LGBT people in Honduras.

If you are concerned about travel risks in Honduras, we recommend that you book flights between Atlanta, Houston, Miami, or other gateway cities outside of Honduras directly into and returning from the island of Roatan.
